Sanne Wevers is the most successful Dutch women's gymnast of the modern era. At 35 she is competing at a World Championships in her home country. She has said Rotterdam will be her last.

A beam specialist

Wevers trains in Heerenveen with her father, Vincent Wevers. Her twin sister Lieke, six minutes younger, also competed for the Netherlands at the highest level. Sanne's gymnastics has always been about balance beam. Her routines are known for unusual turns and an unhurried rhythm that judges reward on execution.

She has a beam element named after her, a double turn with the free leg held forward at horizontal. It entered the Code of Points at the 2010 World Championships, which were also held in Rotterdam.

Medals

- 2015 Glasgow Worlds: balance beam silver. - 2016 Rio Olympics: balance beam gold, the Netherlands' first Olympic title in women's gymnastics since 1928. - European Championships: beam gold in 2018 and 2023, plus team bronze in both years.

The last chapter

Wevers did not compete in 2025. She came back in 2026, won the Dutch beam title, competed at the European Championships and was named to the Worlds team on 6 October. In an interview with Olympics.com she said that this time the decision to stop is final.

Rotterdam 2026

The Netherlands' women compete in qualification on Monday 19 October in the 16:00 subdivision. A place in the balance beam final would give Wevers one more routine at Ahoy, the arena where her skill was first named sixteen years ago.
