2020 European Men's Artistic Gymnastics Championships – Baku plans

The men's European Championships were scheduled for Baku at the end of May 2020. Azerbaijan had become one of the most active hosts in European gymnastics during the decade, and the National Gymnastics Arena was by then a familiar venue for international events.

The original plan

Like the women's championships, the men's event was set up in the even-year team format, with seniors competing for team and apparatus titles and juniors for team, all-around and apparatus medals. Coming two months before the Tokyo Olympics, it would have been a final test for many national teams.

Postponement and relocation

The pandemic stopped the plan in March 2020. The event was postponed, and a men's European Championships was eventually held in Mersin, Turkey, in December 2020. As with the women's event, travel restrictions and health concerns meant many leading federations stayed at home, so the results from that edition do not compare directly with a normal European Championships.

Why the page remains

Fans and journalists linked the Baku event page widely before the cancellation. We keep this archive entry so those links lead to an explanation rather than a dead end.

What the gap meant for men's gymnastics

- National programmes lost a key selection meet before Tokyo. - Young seniors missed the chance to make their debuts at a full-strength championship. - Training continued under restrictions, often with limited access to apparatus.
