The President's Note N°3 2016

March 8, 2016

By Georges Guelzec, UEG President

Dear friends,

This month will be one of reflexion and analysis before the action begins. March precedes the opening of an exceptional 2016 gymnastics season to which we will have the opportunity to come back to. A calm appearance, before an outpour of spectacular and historic events.

For the UEG and its authorities, the work group ‘Strategy’ continues its reflexion in order to consolidate its proposals and conclusions which will be presented to all member federations at the 2017 Congress in Split (CRO). There, the time for discussion will come to an end, as the delegates will vote and design our sport of tomorrow and the day after tomorrow.

Until then, a lot of water will flow under the bridge of gymnastics, particularly at the FIG where the authorities will be renewed this coming October. The challenges of these elections escape no one. The European officials to be elected will carry our project of a new gymnastics: ambitious, open to everyone and in perfect harmony with the expectations of the gymnasts of the 2020 generation.

On 4 June, in Bern, we will determine our strategy for the representatives that the UEG and its 50 federations are legitimately entitled to claim, in a spirit of collegiality with the other Unions of the FIG. The UEG aims to be participative and transparent.

Concerning participation, I have accepted, with honour and responsibility, an invitation addressed by the African Union of Gymnastics (UAG) to assist at the 13th African Gymnastics Championships, from 19 to 27 March in Algiers (ALG). I responded with in my mind the solidarity that the UEG extends to its African neighbour. Our destinies are linked facing the modern challenges to develop a strong, open, multicultural and solidary gymnastics.

Talking about sports, the 25th European Championships in Trampoline, Tumbling and Double Mini-Trampoline in Valladolid (ESP) which kick off on 31 March, are also a source of great satisfaction. The competence of the organisers is marvellous and the coordination with the Technical Committee works well. And, icing on the cake, we have registered a record participation of 30 federations and 694 gymnasts in the junior and senior categories!

To conclude, I confess my pride to see that our Federations are loyal to the schedule of their weekly appointment. Federation Friday is a success. The formula appeals. Every week, one country opens the doors of its gyms and shares with us its projects, ideas and expectations. This topicality, it’s the UEG of every day, facing its reality and its imagination. And, sometimes, we can even catch a glimpse of Luigi’s smile ….

Hope to see you soon again!

With my compliments,

Georges GUELZEC,
UEG President
