The President's Note N° 8 2017

August 11, 2017

By Georges Guelzec, UEG President

Dear friends

Summer has smiled at the European gymnasts. From all walks of life, the great performances of our athletes have delighted many. I will mention in particular the Greek group Olympiada Thrakomakedonon who brilliantly won the third edition of the Gym For Life Challenge, organised by our friends of the Norwegian Gymnastics Federation. The event, which was attended by 88 clubs, of which 77 were European, was a success and a demonstration that popular gymnastics has all the ingredients to gain impressive audience scores from its international audience.

The 10th World Games in Wroclaw (POL) were also an occasion for great satisfaction for our delegations in Poland, especially for the Russian gymnasts, the most decorated of these Games with 9 gold, 6 silver and 2 bronze medals, far ahead of China and the USA. Congratulations to these athletes and to the 15 UEG Federations present.

On the sidelines of the Gym For Life Challenge, the FIG Executive meeting in which I participated was held. Numerous topics gave rise to sustained debates, in particular in regards to the desirability of integrating a new discipline and organising, as early as 2019, the world junior championships, thus joining the UEG philosophy in terms of training and promotion of young gymnasts. It is also a step towards harmonising the criteria for qualifying for the Youth Olympic Games. As for the opportunity of increasing the number of judges in rhythmic gymnastics, as it has been decided to put in practice at the Pesaro Worlds (ITA), it remains to be seen if too many judges do not "kill" justice. "Summum jus, summa injuria!"

With my compliments.
