The President's Note N° 8 2016

August 29, 2016

By Georges Guelzec, UEG President

To you, the Gymnasts!

You made us dream! You carried us away to a country where gymnastics shines brightly. I am - we all are - proud of you, of your results, your sportsmanship, the message you have transmitted to the young generation that watched you attentively, numerous and filled with wonder.

But my thoughts go also out to those gymnasts who were very unlucky, who were injured, who performed below average and I repeat the wise words full of courage from Samir Ait Said. His leg broken, in front of the cameras, he called us as witness that he will be at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics with a gold medal! What a lesson!

A participation in the Olympic Games marks a person for life. It is an experience which enriches us, feeds us on values which are essential for our development: work, tenacity, sportsmanship, humility, solidarity. It is a milestone in each one of our individual journeys which we relate to at any moment, in particular during the hard times life has in store for us, by saying to ourselves: “I was there, I did it.”

Dear Friends,

Rio de Janeiro belongs now already to the past. We have lived these Games as we do it each time, with the same emotions. We owe this experience of course to the gymnasts but also to the Brazilian organisers who have accomplished miracles to bring these Games to such a successful conclusion. Thank you!

I am also grateful to the staff of the participating federations for taking such good care of the gymnasts which was essential for the success of their performances.

I won’t forget the juries, the technicians of the different committees who have perfectly managed and assumed their responsibilities in all situations.

I wish all of you a good return to your federations and a good remaining season. I am looking forward to seeing you at the 2017 European meetings.

With my compliments.

Georges GUELZEC, President of the UEG
