The President's Note N° 7 2018

July 11, 2018

By Dr. Farid Gayibov, UEG President

Dear members of Gymnastics family!

The first month of summer – June - marked the start of the European Championships in Rhythmic Gymnastics. We all witnessed the successful European Championships in Guadalajara. Representatives of 40 countries competed in the events. This a record number of participants in the European Championships in this discipline, and, I think it is a great achievement for us. I would especially like to mention the Spanish audience which is simply fantastic. No matter that the format of the competition is not perfect and needs to be reviewed, thanks to Spanish fans there was an amazing atmosphere in the competition venue. We were honoured with the presence of President of National Olympic Committee of Spain, Mr. Alejandro Blanco Bravo at our competition.  I would like to express my gratitude to the Major of the City of Guadalajara Mr. Antonio Román Jasanada for all the effort made for the success of the event in close cooperation with the Royal Spanish Gymnastics Federation. I am also very grateful to both the junior and senior gymnasts who demonstrated the elegance of rhythmic gymnastics in their routines.

After Guadalajara, the eyes of the European gymnastics fans were directed to Baku which hosted the Youth Olympic Games Qualifying Competition in Artistic Gymnastics. Juniors from 32 countries in total competed in the All-Around. For the first time, there was no transition of apparatus as all of them were on the Field of Play at the same time. It ran smoothly thanks to the efforts of the UEG Men’s and Women’s Artistic Gymnastics Technical Committees and their close and efficient cooperation with the LOC.

At the end of June, we gathered at our headquarters in Lausanne for the year’s second Executive Committee Meeting. On the first day, the meeting of the Presidential Board took place. The next day, we met with the Presidents of the Technical Committees. This was followed by the Executive Committee Meeting on day three and four. Many issues included into the Agenda were discussed, but some of them are still open for discussions as we were pressed for time. All the participants agreed that we need to go forward, advance, work a lot and use all our strength to implement plans for the future of gymnastics. Some of them had already found their solutions. Along with the allocation of the 2020 Golden Age Gym Festival to the Greek island of Crete and the 2021 Individual European Championships in Artistic Gymnastics to Basel (SUI), we also approved the budget and strategy for the development programme and the UEG Technical Regulations were updated. Of course, many issues still remain to be considered during our next meeting. Following the FIG principle, we decided to organise it in one of the countries where gymnastics is at the stage of development – we head to Skopje (MKD)!

Within the framework of the Executive Committee, a very important presentation was made by FIG Men’s Artistic Gymnastics Technical Committee Member Jeff Thomson. Gymnastics was presented by Mr. Thomson to be the No. 1 sport in the world. The main idea of the presentation was that gymnastics is not only a training for high performance sport, but it plays a great role in prevention of obesity, children’s physical activity, training in the army, rehabilitation and etc. At gymnastics lobbies, we had an interesting discussion about the real goal of gymnastics which concluded that every movement made by a baby from the day he was born in the course of entire life is actually fundamental gymnastics.

Looking ahead, during the hot summer days of July, we will have another event which is EUROGYM preceded by the 1st European Gym for Life Challenge. This is the very point when all people of different ages demonstrate their skills within groups and have them evaluated by evaluators. What can be more beautiful than another gymnastics event displaying combination of gymnastics, friendship and fun?

Let’s move towards a healthy life style and unbelievable sport records.
