The President's Note N° 4 2017

April 5, 2017

By Georges Guelzec, UEG President

Dear Friends,

With the 7th European Championships in Artistic Gymnastics, which will be held from April 19th to 23rd, in Cluj-Napoca (ROU), our Union ignites the post-Olympicinternational gymnastic season.

The event is both historical and universal.

It brilliantly marks, after 60 years, the return of the elite of European gymnastics to Romania. In fact, according to the Big Book of our History, the Romanian Federation organised, in 1957, the first European Championships of Artistic Gymnastics (then called European Cup!) exclusively dedicated to women’s gymnastics. The FIG, then organiser of the continental competitions, had already dedicated such a competition to the men in 1955 (Frankfurt / GER) and had to offer the same opportunity to the women, which was done in 1957 in Bucharest, in the Floreasca Arena.

Historic indeed, the event will also be universal. Its audience will largely exceed the European borders, due to the quality of the athletes and the level of gymnastics that they will perform. It will also be with the presence of its prestigious Ambassador, Nadia Comaneci, to whom our sport owes so much and she will do us the honour and pleasure to welcome us in Cluj.

It is not necessary to remind all generations of gymnasts the exemplary path of Nadia, of her humanitarian engagement for children, of her action against precariousness, injustice. Her talent, her personality, her human qualities reflect on the image of our sport. We are all very grateful to her.

In Cluj and to this day, 37 federations are registered, in total 274 gymnasts (168 men / 106 women). They are all assured to find optimal conditions for training, competition and accommodation. The organisers and volunteers have proven us their expertise and desire to reserve us a welcome that we will all remember. In our name, I warmly thank them.

2017 is also the year of our Rhythmic, Aerobic and Acrobatic Europeans, the state of preparation is delighting me and I will come back later on them.

Look ahead!

I am already looking at 2018 and 2019 and to two major events of our calendar and for which we are today multiplying the preparation meetings. It is respectively the 1st European Championships in Glasgow (GBR) and the 2nd European Games in Minsk (BLR).

The first named will serve as frame for the 33rd and 32nd European Championships in men’s and women’s artistic gymnastics. A worldwide event all by itself. Our British friends have proven at many occasions their innate sense of organisation and staging. Gymnastics will illuminate the majestic SSE Hydro Arena of Glasgow and the networks of more than a billion spectators!

The second event in Minsk in 2019 falls within the continuation of the media and popular success of Baku 2015, where our Union shook the received ideas and renewed its competition formats in a spectacular way, by inviting around the same field of play a bouquet of gymnastics as diversified as spectacular. We are in close cooperation with the actors of this event, especially the European Olympic Committees (EOC) and we hope to renew this action.

Tomorrow, after tomorrow.

Very soon you will be called upon to study the proposals that will appear in the report of our Working Group « Strategy ». Then, you will be invited to choose, to decide and to assume the face of European gymnastics which will have to seduce tomorrow the largest number of people. I ask each one of you to apprehend these choices with an open mind on novelty, by contemplating new visions that our gymnasts, the media and the public wish for. Just like a gymnast, the entire UEG must be animated by a healthy spirit in a healthy body!

With my compliments.

Georges Guelzec, President.
