The first edition of the European Championships in 2018 is already emerging on UEG’s radar. Only recently, we participated in the Board meeting, at the table were seated representatives of the European Federations and Unions of athletics, swimming, rowing, cycling, triathlon, golf and of course gymnastics. Our presence in this group confirms the credit and the popularity of our discipline has with the highest European sports bodies. The UEG plays in the big league and will be one of the key actors of the most important sporting event of the calendar.
We are particularly looking for to the collaboration with our friends of British Gymnastics, the Glasgow task force, whose effectiveness and know-how no longer need to be proven, and with our partner Eurovision, the official broadcaster of the European Championships and the production intrusted to the BBC. The event will generate 250 hours of TV broadcast and will reach an audience estimated at 1 billion 300 million individuals!
The UEG participates actively in the preparations. As such, I warmly thank our delegates at the Coordination Commission of the European Championships, Martin Reddin, who has become member of the FIG EC in the meantime and has been replaced by Erik Juhl Mogensen, member of our EC, and our General Director, Kirsi Erofejeff-Engman.
I also welcome the prospect of our forthcoming European Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Cluj (ROU). The information gathered from our Romanian friends on site allows us to anticipate a high level competition, in an optimal setting.
And recently, we received great news, I will not hide it any longer, a legitimate pride, to be able to count on the contribution of Nadia Comaneci, promoted recently to the rank of official Ambassador of these European Championships. On behalf of all of you, I would like to thank her for her presence and her long-standing commitment to our sport, which she promotes beyond borders and generations.
On another note, I wish the new FIG authorities, who have just participated in the traditional handover of power ceremony, much success. In this regard, I’d like to note the creation of two new commissions, one devoted to innovation and the other dedicated to women in gymnastics, chaired respectively by Nellie Kim (BLR) and Slava Corn (CAN). My best wishes also go out to our friend Arturs Mickevics (LAT), promoted to President of the FIG’s Men’s Technical Committee, following Steve Butcher’s new Technical Coordinator role, and to Barbara Stengl (GER) who joins the Aerobics Technical Committee at the FIG.
For our federations and artistic gymnasts, this month of March is focused on the final fine-tuning before meeting at the European stage in Cluj.
I’m looking for to seeing you there and to experience new and passionate competitions together.
With my compliments
