The President's Note N° 11 2016

November 7, 2016

By Georges Guelzec, UEG President

Dear friends

In Tokyo, a vote was expressed. It elected Morinari Watanabe for the Presidency of the next cycle. I wish him as well as his new team good luck to light the way for the development of a sport requiring experience and expertise. My best wishes also go out to all the elected candidates representing European gymnastics. I wish them lots of success in their mandate which they will, I hope, do in full independence and sovereignty. Turning this page, with hindsight, I note that a vote was expressed sanctioning a strategy at the heart of which gymnastics is not an end but a means. This is how sports goes.

Gymnastics wins!

In the autumn of 2016, the UEG has every reason in the world to be proud of the development of its disciplines … for all.  Indeed in Slovenia, both in Portoroz and in Maribor, on the occasion of the last gymnastics events of the season, we witnessed fireworks, first at the 5th Golden Age then at the 11th European TeamGym Championships. A magnificent success in both cases.

This edition of Golden Age will stay in our memory because of the quality of the shows on offer by the gymnasts and of the infrastructure made available by our Slovenian friends. Our TeamGym has once again demonstrated its progress both in quality of sport as in audience numbers. Among the most positive comments, those of the TV rights holders attracted the attention of the Technical Committee. This discipline has the potential and a certain future and will gain in power the coming years.

This pleases me and I congratulate the respective Technical Committees, Golden Age being presided by Alberto Claudino Nunez and TeamGym by Per Sjöstrand.

Already 2017!

Focus now shifts towards the year 2017, a vintage marked by Europeans in Artistic Gymnastics in Cluj Napoca (ROU), in Rhythmic Gymnastics in Budapest (HUN), Aerobics in Ancona (ITA) and Acrobatic Gymnastics in Rzeszow (POL). I am looking for to this calendar, these destinations and to meeting you there next year.

2017 will also be the year of the statutory renewal of our authorities. The elections in Split (CRO), in December, will consolidate the UEG in its capacity as holder of the fundamental values of gymnastics and its pioneering status of its sustainable development. I invite the candidates to come forward and  thank them for putting their competence and time at the disposal of our sport and its influence in Europe and the world.

2017 will also be the year in which I have the privilege and honour to finalise a mandate dominated by a vision for gymnastics that will live on for our successors, tomorrow and the day after tomorrow.

With my compliments,

Georges GUELZEC, Président de l’UEG
