The President's Note N° 10 2016

October 4, 2016

By Georges Guelzec, UEG President

Dear friends

This month, October 2016, will enter in FIG’s Big Book of its already long history. The oldest International Sports Federation is getting ready to say goodbye to its President, at the helm for 5 legislatures.

The 20 years that have elapsed have been richer in revolution than the first 100 of the FIG. Under the guidance of Bruno Grandi, the FIG absorbed all the mutations which affected the world, in terms of technological, media, sociological and economic developments. A vast space separates the world of 1996 and that of 2016!

At the time of renewal at the top of the FIG, it is my task as President of the most important continental Union in gymnastics, to salute and pay tribute to the work realised by my friend Bruno.

More than anyone, I know the difficulty of such a mandate. At the same time candidate for his succession and at the head of the UEG since 2010, I measure the issues and challenges to be met. Faced with the weight and the responsibility of this load, I confess that the passion for my sport gives me the strength and the energy and this until the end of my mandate, in December 2017.

In Tokyo, all FIG authorities will be renewed. On several occasions, I expressed myself about the responsibilities of the UEG’s member federations, to consolidate its positions at the different stages of decisions at the FIG. You all know the saying …he who is absent is always in the wrong. Also, I am convinced that I can count on your perceptiveness and your political sense in making the choices that logic commands and resist the material temptations without future.

Hvala Slovenijo!

Thank you Slovenia! And from the bottom of the heart, to have met the challenges in organising in Portoroz and Maribor, respectively, the 5th Golden Age Gym Festival and the 11th European TeamGym Championships.

These are key events on the UEG calendar. They illustrate -and put in the spotlight- gymnastics as a popular, multicultural, generational sport, which constitutes the assets of gymnastics in Europe and around the world. TeamGym and Golden Age are two exclusivities offered by the UEG label. Two formats rising in power to the audience, to the media.

In Portoroz, we registered a record number of participants: 1808! With added bonus during the Opening, a parade of all 18 Federations present and a Flash Mob that we’ll remember forever.

In Maribor, where 14 Federations will participate, the entire qualifications and finals will be streamed live on UEG’s YouTube channel. And live on TV in Iceland and Sweden!

We must rejoice in the enthusiasm around these 2 events as this makes us take comfort in the choices that we have made. Gymnastics is developing in all its registers. We rejoice with you.

With my compliments.

Georges GUELZEC, UEG President
