The President's Note N° 1 2017

January 10, 2017

By Georges Guelzec, UEG President

Dear friends

Happy New Year!

Some will look in the stars, horoscopes, or their coffee-grounds to find out what 2017 has in store for them. For my part, I am convinced that the year ahead of us is the one designed by our projects, our objectives, maybe even our utopia. The start of a new Olympic cycle is also the occasion to re-evaluate the priorities, to make the choices that good governance demands.

As far as our Union is concerned, the Congress in Split in December comprises one of these priorities to which we devote our reflexion and our energy to consolidate and develop the heritage of the creators of the UEG, 35 years on.

This meeting is of course electoral. But this subject must in no case obscure the other topics on the agenda, including the conclusions of our Work Group « Strategy », to which I would ask you to pay particular attention. We will have the chance to return to this topic soon.

On a more general note, 2017 will see the expected twists and turns on issues that are not very glorious for global sport and whose impact could be measured at the borders of our Union.

I take the occasion of this first Note to launch a vibrant appeal to my friends the Presidents of our member federations to increase their level of surveillance of all aspects of the fight against doping and the protection of our young gymnasts. The recent international news has shown us that drifts exist and it is our duty to respond with the utmost firmness. This is our mission, our responsibility as elected officials.

Apart from this warning, I must admit that, between you and me, this year 2017 looks exciting. Especially for our gymnasts who prepare for the European Championships in Cluj-Napoca (ROU – WAG & MAG), Budapest (HUN - RG), Ancona (ITA – AER) or Rzeszow (POL – ACRO), for those who will be aligned at FIG competitions, at the Gym for Life Challenge, the Universiade, or also at the World Games. The year is rich in events, promising firework, and I am looking for to it.

In 2017, we will endeavour to celebrate, on various occasions, the 35th anniversary of the founding of the UEG. Further details will be announced shortly.

I wish you all a Happy New Year!

Georges Guelzec
