By Jacky Wischnia, UEG-MTC President

We are at the beginning of a new year, a very important year as it is an Olympic year! All effort of gymnasts, coaches and judges are focused on Rio 2016. On the way is the preparation for the European Championships in Bern. Of course before the Europeans some gymnasts need to qualify in the test event to gain their Olympic ticket. We are proud that many of our judges received an invitation to judge at either the test event or the Olympic Games. The Men’s Technical Committee wishes all gymnasts, coaches and judges a successful build-up to and participation at these key events.

This year the MTC continues its good cooperation with the FIG MTC who have invited the Presidents of the continental unions for a meeting this month.

Mark these dates: 16 to 19 April! That’s when the first big test of 2016 will come. In the Olympic host city, Rio de Janeiro, nonetheless. The test event is the second and last chance to earn a ticket to the actual Olympics. Of the 8 teams fighting for the remaining 4 team berths 7 are European! Of course there are also 40 individuals doing all-around to qualify for the biggest sporting event in the world. Good luck to our gymnasts! We will be supporting with pride!

At the end of May, the Post-Finance Arena of the Swiss capital Bern will provide the last big test before the Olympics for Europe’s senior gymnasts and the first step into the spotlight for the juniors. The schedule has been finalised, our TC is working closely with the experienced staff of the Local Organising Committee and the Swiss Gymnastics Federation to make this event a fantastic experience for competitors, judges and fans alike. Tickets are already on sale. Don’t miss your chance to be part of this amazing event!

‘Smart Rings’ is a project by InnoSportLab with automatically measures the time for hold elements on Rings. As reported earlier the Smart Ring was tested at the 2015 European Championships in Montpellier. Later the system was successfully tested as an integrated part of a 4 way competition between BEL, NED, SUI and ROU.

In light of the positive tests, the UEG Men’s Technical Committee has decided to put the system in action, as an official part of the scoring at the upcoming European Championship for Juniors in Bern, SUI. The system will be managed by two appointed judges who will control the input based on agreed methodology.

The Men’s Technical Committee thanks the company InnoSportLab (NED), and the Apparatus supplier Janssen-Fritsen, for the close cooperation.

In November a blog was created with information for judges and coaches:  Since then the blog has had more than 8000 visitors. In the blog you can find educational material for Coaches and Judges. So far the coaching educational videos had more than 50000 views and the videos concerning judging had more 10000 views. This year after the European Championships in Bern as well as after the training camp in Tirrenia, new educational videos will be uploaded with the issues covered during these events.

Already for more than 25 years, the UEG and the Italian Gymnastic Federation have together arranged the summer gymnastics camp, which is traditionally held in Tirrenia (Italy). This year also from 26th June to 6th July, Tirrenia will become a place where young gymnasts with their coaches will acquire new skills (theoretical and practical) with the support of best European experts. Alongside the daily practice, all participants will attend daily trips to the beach and swimming as well as various sporting and social activities and go on a trip to Pisa and Florence. We expect the participation of twenty countries, andif you have not yet signed up you can do it today!

Kind regards
