Ready, Set, Go!

Hope you are Ready, Set and eager to Go to Maribor, Slovenia, and the 2016 pinnacle event of the TeamGym calendar … the European Championships!

We are now only three weeks before Europe’s best seniors and juniors will be the focus of the entire TeamGym and gymnastics community. This is the 11 th UEG TeamGym competition and the 4 th as official European Championships for this young UEG discipline.

In total 47 teams have registered for the event, more teams compared to both Reykjavik 2014 and Aarhus 2012, and a substantial increase in the number of teams in the junior mixed section. We can look forward to exciting competition days from 12 to 15 October!

A special mention goes to the new Federations visiting Maribor for the Side Event INform, INspire, INvolve – IN TeamGym! We hope to welcome many of you!

The Local Organizing Committee (LOC) in Maribor has already geared up for a successful event by recently holding an open international TeamGym competition as a test event to gain experience for the real action. We can assure you that the LOC is working hard to get everything ready for an exceptional European Championships.

The European Championships are very close now! Do you have a ticket for travelling? Have you booked accommodation? Do you have the latest information about the event? If the answer is 'No' to any of these questions, please visit the UEG event webpage and the official webpage for the Championships for any further information and to purchase tickets.

To make it easier to follow the competitions a special short version of the TeamGym Code of Points, a Mini CoP, is available for download on the UEG TeamGym webpage. It is currently available in French, English and German. A Russian version is also on its way.

This year the Technical Committee for TeamGym planned a number of special events to assist new Federations in the development of TeamGym.

Extra Judges’ Course

In order to offer newer TeamGym federations the possibility to bring sufficient number of judges to the European Championships, an extra Brevet judges’ course was held in Maribor in mid-March. 13 participants representing the Czech Republic, Germany, Italy and Slovenia took the exam. In total we now count 73 international TeamGym judges representing 16 UEG member Federations. All federations will be present in Maribor.

Training Camp/Coaches’ course

The 13th annual TeamGym camp/coaches’ was held at Accademia Acrobatica in Cesenatico, Italy, on July 16th -23rd. This year the camp/course gathered in total 25 coaches, 99 gymnasts and 9 experts led by Norway’s Brian Carlson.  With Anders Frisk (SWE), concentrating on the floor part of the course, Brian and Jimmy Ekstedt (SWE), rotated between the camp and the course which maintained seven coaches working on the camp.

Workshops at EUROGYM 2016

During the same week TeamGym workshops were organized in close cooperation with the LOC at EUROGYM in České Budějovice (CZE). About 400 participants from 9 countries visited the TeamGym workshops taking place on July 20th – 23rd. TeamGym experts Thomas Kent (DEN) and Donna Crowther (GBR) led the level 2 workshops in trampet and tumbling with support from Czech national coaches.

At the TeamGym European Championships this October, the Slovenian Gymnastics Federation -in conjunction with TeamGym TC member Keith Hughes- will be hosting a special side event.  It is especially for representatives of Federations who would like to know a little more about this dynamic gymnastics discipline.  It is called "INform, INspire INvolve - IN TeamGym” and several new Federations have already indicated their intention to attend, but there is still space for a few more.

Bev and Julian Such will be the hosts.  They are very experienced in starting TeamGym from nothing.  Their club in Portsmouth is now one of the top TeamGym Clubs in England. Their main objective will be to INSPIRE the delegates and to give them help in starting and developing this amazing sport, when they get back to their own countries. They will have several videos and special guests to talk to them about their specific expertise.  We know it is not easy, but this event will give help and advice in all the key areas.  What is needed at Federation and Club level?  How do we set up the three key areas - Coaching, Judging and Competition Organisation? In addition, there will be follow-up support for each new Federation.

All delegates will be able to attend training and see the Finals of the European Championships. They will experience the special thrill of an exciting TeamGym competition and the enthusiasm of the TeamGym supporters.

The TC TeamGym is also busy developing the rules for the next 4-year cycle.

The main direction of development was defined already last year and together with a TeamGym SWOT analysis performed in April this year, major items that affect the TeamGym Rules and the Code of Points have been identified.

Thanks to all federations who answered our request for feedback on the current Code of Points. This is of great help for the committee when entering the next phase starting directly after the European Championships. We plan to publish the new version in the spring of 2017.

Looking forward to seeing you in Maribor in October!
