The Swiss stars win the 2017 edition of the Swiss Cup

In Zurich’s Hallenstadion 10 pairs started the competition, including the winner of the last two editions Oleg Verniaiev (UKR) with his new partner Diana Varinska. The unique format of the Swiss Cup matches one male and one female gymnast and both scores are combined to determine the team total. Starting with a qualification round, the 6 best pairs advance to the semi-final and the top three to the final. Thousands of fans cheered on their favourites, creating a wonderful atmosphere enhances even more by the live band and the cool lighting.

Stars like Marine Boyer, Marian Dragulescu, Daria Spiridonova, Nikolay Kuksenkov and Tabea Alt were eliminated in the 2-event qualification round while the semi-final saw the elimination of Verniaiev and Varinska and the second German duo Marcel Nguyen and Eli Seitz. To the delight of the Swiss audience the 2 Swiss pairs advanced to the final, both trailing Japan though. In the final Giulia Steingruber’s solid vaulting and Pablo Braegger’s excellent parallel bars routine set the standard as Japan’s consistent performances lacked the difficulty to overtake the Swiss stars. The spectacular trophy and a cheque of CHF 25000 stays in Switzerland this time, the honour going to Giulia Steingruber and Pablo Braegger!
