Star-studded field inspire at Cottbus World Cup

November 26, 2018

The first World Cup stage of the 2019 – 2020 circuit was held last weekend

An impressive line-up signed up for the first World Cup stage of the 2019 – 2020 season in the Lausitz-Arena in Cottbus (GER). Many gymnasts are looking to use the World Cup events to earn their ticket to the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo (JPN), causing a significant increase in participation.

In the women’s competition, Brazil was on fire, taking three of the four gold medals. Rebeca Andrade won gold on vault and beam while Flavia Saraiva was the best on floor. On bars, European and World Champion Nina Derwael (BEL) continued to dominate, showing the highest difficulty (6.5) to take the gold medal with an advantage of 6 tenths over Andrade. Ukraine’s Diana Varinska finished third on beam and Poland’s Marta Pihan-Kulesza clinched bronze on floor.

Four European gymnasts were victorious in the men’s competition: Israel’s Artem Dolgopyat won floor, Igor Radivilov (UKR) was the best on the vault while compatriot Oleg Verniaiev topped the parallel bars standing and three-time World Champion Epke Zonderland (NED) beat 2017 World Champion Tin Srbic (CRO) for the high bar gold.
