Russian juniors take team gold while Nicolo Mozzato earns all-around crown

August 10, 2018

Competition report of the junior qualifications, team and all-around final

Great Britain has won every junior team and all-around European title since 2008 and came into the Hydro looking to prolong their leadership. A strong team featuring Adam Tobin, Pavel Karnejenko, Jamie Lewis, Jake Jarman and Donell Osbourne, the British lads scored a massive 43.399 on vault and also topped the ranking on floor and pommel horse. They went into the final rotation with a favourable lead but suffered falls. Meanwhile the Russian junior team consisting of Yuri Busse, Viktor Kaliuzhin, Sergei Naidin, Mikhail Khudchenko and Grigoriy Klimentev, excelled on high bar and posted the second-highest total on pommel horse. They knew they needed three superb performances on rings if they were to overtake Great Britain. And that is exactly what they did: the top three scores of the day on the event gave them an edge of 8 tenths and their first junior European title since 2004! The bronze medal winner was decided at the very last minute, after the last routine of the day! As Nicolo Mozzato hit his rings routine he brought Italy in front of Switzerland, by a margin of less than a tenth. Italy delighted and disappointment for the Swiss.

In the second subdivision an exciting battle for all-around glory unfolded between Great Britain’s Jamie Lewis and Russia’s Sergei Naidin. Both performed well but counted falls, Naidin on pommel horse, where he is the defending junior European Champion and Lewis on high bar. After 6 events, less than 2 tenths separated the two with Lewis taking the slight advantage. But as the saying goes: while two dogs fight for a bone, a third runs away with it. In the third subdivision Italy’s Nicolo Mozzato performed excellent routines, highlighted by the top score on high bar. When he landed his rings dismount he celebrated not only the team success but his own individual glory!
