Dear Gymnastic friends,

Our Technical Committee stayed busy in the second half of 2017 with the organisation of two educational events and the continuation of the preparation for next year’s big events, EUROGYM and Golden Age Gym Festival, not to forget the first ever European Gym for Life Challenge!

The Educational Choreo Camp, in Anadia (POR), and the Seminar “Gymnastics for Fun”, in Loughborough (GBR), showed that the interest for these kind of workshops is still on the rise in Europe. We also partnered with the European Commission for the European Week of Sport, an initiative that gets millions of people all over Europe on their feet to #BeActive! Meanwhile, Italy is gearing up to host the Golden Age Gym Festival in Pesaro (ITA) and they showed at the info meeting in October just what a wonderful time the participants can expect in September next year …

For the third year in a row, UEG partnered with the European Commission to participate in and promote the European Week of Sport. The dates have now been fixed from 23 to 30 September to improve continuity between the years. The aim stays the same: to promote sport and physical activity across Europe. Reaching millions of people all over Europe, this initiative unites people of all walks of life, regardless of age, background or fitness level.

UEG organised a photo / video challenge and we want to thank everyone who participated! Those balance poses were awesome… and so are you!

This workshop, aimed at providing knowledge in preparing, coaching, evaluating and selecting groups for Gymnastics for All festivals, was timed perfectly as many of our Federations have started the selection process for the European Gym for Life Challenge, EUROGYM and Golden Age Gym Festival. 53 participants from 5 National Federations (POR, FIN, ISL, SWE and FRA) met in Anadia (POR) and gave the best of themselves, exchanging ideas, trying new concepts and discussing at great length. At the end of the course, a fabulous Flash Mob showed what the participants had picked up.

Gymnastics is fun, right? Of course it is! And we had lots of fun in Loughborough (GBR). I had the pleasure of attending the seminar and I was impressed by the quality of the ideas that were discussed. It convinced me even more than before that the creativity and possibilities for Gymnastics for All are endless. The lectures and practical sessions attended by the motivated participants encourages sharing knowledge and learning from others. We focused on putting more ‘F’ in Gymnastics: Fun, Fitness and Fundamentals, showing basic gymnastics teaching skills and movements, getting to know what is fun to do and how to develop gymnastics in clubs. I hope the participants has as much fun as I had!

On 7 and 8 October 12 federations sent their representatives to Pesaro to check out all the facilities the 6th Golden Age Gym Festival organisers have to offer. The Italians showed their warm nature and big heart, happily assisting with any inquiries and taking everyone on a tour of the sites that will be used next September in Rossini’s birthplace. This info meeting gave a great impression of both the city and the organisers and whet the appetite for the actual event, from 16 to 21 September 2018!

The provisional registrations for these two events are looking good! For the 1st ever European Gym for Life Challenge, on Saturday 14 July 2018, a massive 863 gymnasts have expressed their interest! And for EUROGYM the numbers are impressive as well: 160 groups represented by 4111 participants from 16 countries! Looks like the Belgian summer will be filled with gymnastics!

14 July                        1st European Gym for Life Challenge – Liege (BEL)

15 – 19 July                 11th EUROGYM – Liege (BEL)

16 – 21 September      6th Golden Age Gym Festival – Pesaro (ITA)

As I leave Technical Committee, I’m sure that the new team elected at the 27th UEG Congress in Split (CRO), under the leadership of my dear friend Hlif Thorgeirsdottir (ISL), will do a great job for the development of Gymnastics for All in Europe. Thank you all for those fantastic 12 years within UEG family!

Happy festive season! We count on your support again for our events in 2018!

Sincerely yours,

Alberto Claudino
