February 10, 2017

Dear Gymnastic friends,

2016 was a great year for the European Gymnastics for All community, with extremely successful events. The EUROGYM in Ceske Budejovice (CZE) and the Golden Age Gym Festival in Portoroz (SLO) will be remembered as highlights of Gymnastics … for everybody!

2017 will be another year full of challenges! We will have our main educational events, the Educational Choreo Camp, in Rome (ITA), and the Seminar “Gymnastics for Fun”, in London (GBR). In 2017 we will also have the info-meetings of the next editions of EUROGYM and the first European Gym for Life Challenge in Liège (BEL) and of Golden Age in Pesaro (ITA).

For the European Week of Sport the UEG is also preparing some surprises... More info to follow in the coming weeks!

The Technical Committee Gymnastics for All is ready to support National Federations that want to develop “Gymnastics for All”. However, the first step should be given by the interested Federations. If you want to have more Gymnastics and better Gymnastics in your country or if you have new ideas or exciting experiences, please, do not hesitate to contact us!

With a record number of participants of 1808 and a superb location on the Adriatic coast, this 5th edition of the Golden Age Gym Festival lived up to the high expectations placed upon it by the participants, coming from 18 countries. We talked with Torill Aas Sundby, head of the Norwegian delegation, the biggest one attending GAGF. Read all about her experiences here:

Hi everyone

My name is Torill Aas Sundby, I work in the office of The Norwegian Gymnastics Federation. I have taken part in the Golden Age Gymnastics Festival since the beginning, as a delegation leader.

In Norway we have a long tradition for Gymnastics for All, and gymnastics festivals. That is the reason that the number of GAGF participants from our country is increasing. In 2008 we had 149 participants, in 2016: 350! Our participants love to go to this festival. The reason is that it is in smaller towns, accommodation is in hotels, and they have time to go sightseeing. Last but not least: the festival is adapted to elderly people.

The organisation of GAGF has become better and better, but the increasing number of participants can be challenging, not only for the organiser, but also for the federations. And the festival could still increase to double the size... Some countries, which traditionally have large delegations in the Gymnaestrada, are not present at all (yet)!

I think the event is very nice, and it is good to see that the different workshops are becoming more and more popular. The people attending workshops in an activity they don’t know anything about, are happy afterwards. We are never too old to learn something new! Unfortunately, I have not had time to participate in the performances, only a few times in the workshops.

The quality of the performances are also increasing, that is nice to see. For the coaches the workshop called Special choreographywas a great offer. The main goal was to practice with the team, get inspired and receive feedback to improve the performance.

The different themes for the parties in Slovenia were very popular, and it made it easier to get to know participants from other countries. We had a great time, and our participants are already planning their next trip – to Pesaro in 2018!

Having received great feedback in previous years, the Gymnastics for All TC is busy preparing the next edition of the Educational Choreo Camp.

This Camp aims to provide knowledge and support for the National Federations in preparing, coaching, evaluating and selecting groups for the Gym for Life Challenge, EUROGYM, Golden Age Gym Festival or other similar events, by focusing on the creative process, composition, evaluation, feedback and coaching.

Anyone can join as we divide the groups into several levels: participants that are (almost) new to choreography, advanced participants and coaches that teach gymnasts aged 50+.

So ... join us in Rome from 28 to 30 April!

After the first successful edition of the Gymnastics for Fun seminar in 2015 in Lillsved (SWE), we are organising a second seminar in London (GBR) from 20 to 22 October.

This Seminar is open to coaches and persons responsible for children and youth within Gymnastics for All and aims to improve your knowledge and give you ideas on how to create and develop attractive gymnastics, built on physical training and gymnastic elements. Practice will be combined with lectures, discussions and group studies so that everyone can share their experiences and learn from each other.

Celebrating its third edition in 2017, the European Week of Sport will be held between 23 and 30 September, all over Europe! Planned to kick off in Tartu (EST) with a spectacular opening ceremony, we invite all gymnasts to participate and show how much fun it is to #BeActive!

UEG plans to organise special Gymnastics events of course. More information will be made public in the coming weeks!

In 2017 UEG organises workshops and focuses on the preparation of the next EUROGYM and Golden Age Gym Festival, planned for 2018 in Liège (BEL) and Pesaro (ITA) respectively.

First up is EUROGYM with the Belgians committed to a huge event, aiming for 5000 participants and also eager to host the first official European Gym for Life Challenge! Our TC will meet with the Local Organising Committee on 17 and 18 February, in view of the Info meeting for delegations scheduled for 13 and 14 May when all venues, accommodation, schedule and cultural activities will be shared with the interested parties.

We hope to welcome you at one of our events!

With my best regards,

Alberto Claudino Nunes
