Maria Sergeeva (RUS) claims 3 titles in Baku

April 30, 2018

The World Cup circuit in Rhythmic Gymnastics continued with the Azerbaijan stage last weekend

With the highest scores with all apparatus except clubs, Russia’s Maria Sergeeva easily claimed the all-around title in Baku’s National Gymnastics Arena, one and a half points ahead of Ukraine’s Vlada Nikolchenko who posted the top score with clubs. Belarussian new senior Anastasia Salos picked up the bronze medal. In apparatus finals, the order stayed much the same with Maria Sergeeva earning gold with hoop and ribbon while Nikolchenko won clubs. Sergeeva’s teammate Ekaterina Selezneva marked the top score with ball bumping Sergeeva to second place while Sergeeva also took the bronze with clubs. A hugely satisfying competition for the 2016 junior European Champion! Two silver medals went to Bulgaria: Boryana Kaleyn with clubs and Vice-European Champion Katrin Taseva with ribbon. The experienced Belarussian Katsiaryna Halkina claimed the silver with hoop.

In the group competition Italy absolutely dominated the all-around, winning the title more than 2 points ahead of Bulgaria with Japan almost three points further behind. In apparatus finals however, it was Bulgaria that came out on top twice, scoring 19.800 for their routine with 5 hoops, and 19.050 for the ropes – balls combination. Italy edged Azerbaijan for the silver with 5 hoops while Ukraine got bumped to third with ropes and balls due to a tie-breaker with Japan.
