Linoy Ashram takes all-around gold in Guadalajara

May 7, 2018

The Spanish city hosted the first World Challenge Cup of the year

Taking the lead on the first day after 2 exercises, Israel’s Linoy Ashram didn’t back down anymore. She edged Russia’s Aleksandra Soldatova by just 0.050 to claim her first ever World Cup all-around victory, a first also for her country. The 18-year-old continues write history! Joining them on the podium was another Russian: Arina Averina.

And it wasn’t over yet for Ashram! In the apparatus finals she collected 3 more medals: gold with ball and silver with hoop and ribbon. Averina claimed the only double victory of the finals, winning both the hoop and clubs final. The Spanish fans, known for their passion for Rhythmic gymnastics went through the roof when Aleksandra Soldatova posted the top score with ribbon. Soldatova went to the crowd to hand out autographs, causing a stampede of young fans over to her corner. We know what to expect next month at the European Championships!

In the group competition, the Bulgarian ladies showed an amazing 14.000 difficulty score with 5 hoops, the highest since the start of the open-end scoring. They held a comfortable margin of over 4 points over nearest rivals Italy to win the all-around but mistakes in the final dropped them the second behind the Italians. The roles were reversed again in the final with 2 ropes and 3 balls. The bronze medals went to three different countries: Russia in the all-around, Belarus with 5 hoops and Azerbaijan with 2 ropes and 3 balls.

Other honourable mentions go to Italy’s Milena Baldassarri who looks in prime shape for the Europeans, placing 4th all-around and qualifying to all finals. She claimed silver with ball and bronze with clubs. And to Belarussian first-year senior Anastasia Salos who outperformed her experienced teammate Katsiaryna Halkina, grabbing the bronze with hoop.
