11th EUROGYM 2018 in Liège: it’s signed

The contract entrusting the organisation of the 11th edition of the EUROGYM has been signed by the representatives of the Royal Belgian Gymnastics Federation (FRBG), of the Gymnastiek Federatie Vlaanderen (GymFed) and the European Union of Gymnastics (UEG). The ceremony was held on June 4th, during the Artistic European Championships in Berne.

Gilbert Vercammen and Jacqueline Herbrand-Quirin, co-Presidents of the GymFed and of the FRBG, as well as Mr Georges Guelzec (FRA) and Ruedi Hediger (SUI), President and first Vice-President of the UEG have signed the agreement and laid the foundation stone of this major event of the calendar of European gymnastics, which will be held in Liège (BEL) from July 16th to 22nd, 2018.

As Alberto Claudino Loureiro Nunes (POR), President of the Technical Committee for Gymnastics for All of the UEG, underlines, EUROGYM represents the biggest meeting of the European gymnasts of the 50 national federations affiliated to the UEG. Each one of these editions gathers serval thousands of gymnasts of every ages and of every levels. Since its creation in 1993 in Lisbon (POR), EUROGYM knows a spectacular progression, confirmed by the participation of some 5000 gymnasts at this year’s edition, which will be held in the Czech Republic, in Ceske Budejovice, from July 18th to 24th.

European premiere

2018 will also be marked by the first edition of the European Gym For Life Challenge. This event will enter the UEG history on July 14th, also in Liège and will serve as curtain raiser for the EUROGYM. This type of meetings, created for the first time by the FIG in 2013, gives the opportunity to the gymnastics clubs to measure themselves in public, in front of experts who are in charge to evaluate the routines of the gymnasts.

It’s a European club, the TS of Götzis, in the Austrian Vorarlberg, who was the winner of the first Challenge organised in Cape Town (RSA).

Return to the roots after 135 years!

It’s in Liège, on July 23rd, 1881, that theBureau of the European Federations of Gymnastics (FEG), the historical beginning of the international Federation (FIG), was created by the native of Anvers Nicolas J. Cupérus (BEL). Belgian, French, Dutch are around the table of this first International Convention.

So, 135 years after the founding act, the international gymnastics, with its EUROGYM, couldn’t pay a better tribute to the pioneers of 1881. In fact, in form and in spirit, gymnastics wanted by its peers was created to promote the well-being, the health, the social cohesion during the industrial revolution of the XIX century, a message still relevant in the universe of today dominated by the digital revolution.
