Fourth victory in a row for Oleg Verniaiev at the Arthur Gander Memorial

November 2, 2017

The 34th edition was held in Morges (SUI)

For Oleg Verniaiev, Switzerland is a yearly stop on his busy competition calendar as the Ukrainian star usually competes in both the Arthur Gander Memorial and the Swiss Cup. The Swiss audience certainly appreciated his presence yesterday in Morges where he aimed to extend his winning streak in the Arthur Gander Memorial. This meet is held alternately in Chiasso and in Morges. In an unusual competition format, the gymnasts don’t compete on all apparatus. The women choose their 3 best events, while the men do 4.

Verniaiev started on pommel horse where his high difficulty equalled out a fall, then gained momentum on rings, vaulted a huge Dragulescu before ending the evening with a stellar parallel bars performance. With 58.050 he easily held off Germany’s Marcel Nguyen and the Netherlands’s Bart Deurloo. Verniaiev’s victorious run started in 2014 in Chiasso and is prolonged for yet another year!

In the women’s competition, a tight battle was fought between Japan’s Hitomi Hatakeda and France’s Marine Boyer with the latter posting the highest score of the evening on beam, a 13.700. After three events, the two talented gymnasts were tied with 40.100. A tie breaker bumped Boyer into second place. Ukraine’s Diana Varinska, who impressed the crowd with a spectacular bars routine, took the bronze medal.

Swiss star Giulia Steingruber withdrew from the meet as she focuses on Sunday’s Swiss Cup but was present in Morges to greet the fans and encourage her teammates.
