Focus on Mental and Physical Preparation in Women’s Artistic Gymnastics

November 17, 2017

At UEG Symposium in Saint Etienne (FRA)

23 coaches from 13 countries attended the UEG’s Symposium for Mental and Physical Preparation in Women’s Artistic Gymnastics, in Saint Etienne (FRA) from 26 to 29 October. Organised by UEG’s WTC members led by their President Yvette Brasier (FRA), the experts included Ulla Koch (GER) as the expert for mental preparation and Nick Ruddock (GBR) as the expert for physical preparation. Koch is well-known in the gymnastics world as the head coach of the German national team, a role she holds since 2005. Koch is also a certified mental coach and gave both a theoretical and a practical lecture focused on breathing and muscle relaxation, mental shortcuts to be just in time for high performance and the visualisation of goals and moment of excellence. Performance Gymnastics coach, consultant and speaker Nick Ruddock discussed the key components of a physical preparation programme for high performance gymnasts and showed a number of different key exercises and movements to develop strength and robustness in quality and quantity.

The participants were divided in two smaller groups facilitating interactions between coaches and experts. At a round table the coaches dicussed the performance’s quantitative and qualitative evaluation in artistic gymnastics, different training programmes and exchanged their experience.

A big thank you to Pôle Gymnastique St Etienne for organising this great event and to UEG President Georges Guelzec, the city of St Etienne, the French Gymnastics Federation and the departments of the Loire and Auvergne/Rhone/Alpes for their support.
