European Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships 2013 - Vienna/AUT : preparation meeting

April 25, 2013

The important coordination meeting on the occasion of the upcoming European Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships was held last April 11th in Vienna. The main participants in this event met to work together throughout the day.

The European Championships will take place from May 31 to June 2, 2013 at the Wiener Stadthalle in Vienna including 34 National Federations.

After a meeting of several hours where a certain number of questions and key points were treated, a visit of the venue was organized.

Ruedi Hediger, Vice-President of the UEG was present at this meeting and we asked him a few questions:

Interview with Ruedi Hediger, Vice-president of the European Union of Gymnastics (UEG)

Oriane Do Rosario : Are you satisfied with the progress of the preparation of the coming European Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships in Vienna?
Ruedi Hediger : The preparations are running well and the most important topics are already settled. The very last details can only be sorted out and corrected in the days preceding the competition. I am certain that the Organising Committee will do its utmost so that we will live an extraordinary European Championship!

Oriane Do Rosario : On Thursday, April 11th, you have participated in a coordination meeting in Vienna. Are you and the Austrian organisers in regular contact?
Ruedi Hediger : I went twice to Vienna. The first time in 2012 to discuss the contents of the contract which the UEG has signed with the Austrian Gymnastics Federation for the organisation of this event;  the second time two weeks ago for the last coordination meeting treating organisational topics.
As a general rule, the UEG Director, Kirsi Erofejeff-Engman, is regularly in contact with the Local Organising Committee (LOC).

Oriane Do Rosario : Can you tell us a bit more about the participants in this meeting and the topics you have discussed?
Ruedi Hediger : The persons having participated in this meeting are: the President and the Vice-presidents of the Austrian Gymnastics Federation as well as the key persons of the Organising Committee. We have discussed certain topics linked to the organisation, as the running of the ceremonies, but also logistical questions and the competition in general. We have checked the paths between the hotels and the competition hall and visited the different installations.

Oriane Do Rosario : Did you visit the installations? What is your opinion?
Ruedi Hediger : The competition will be held in the "Wiener Stadthalle". The hall is very well equipped. The installations are the best and offer everything which can be expected for a ECh. The staff at the venue is extremely competent and used to organise important cultural and sports events. The distance between the hotels and the "Wiener Stadthalle" is so short that the participants can go by foot.

Oriane Do Rosario : Do you think that the Austrian public and the international TV-viewers will have the chance to watch Olympic medallists at the European Championships in Vienna or do you believe that most of them are taking a break after the last season?
Ruedi Hediger : After the London OG, some gymnasts retired, but anyway, many well-known gymnasts will be in Vienna (Confirmation of the gymnasts who will be present with the Nominative entries at the beginning of May)
Following the 2012 OG, the National Federations have included many young gymnasts in their teams in order to prepare them for the 2016 Rio OG. So we will have the chance of watching some future "stars".
