Bulgarian group shines on opening day of Rhythmic Europeans

June 1, 2018

Competition report of day 1 at #EChGuadalajara

The excitement in Guadalajara has been building for weeks now, with the World Cup stage and the International Junior Trophy as a dress rehearsal for the 34th European Championships in Rhythmic Gymnastics!

After 2 days of podium training, the carpet welcomed the juniors for their qualification with ball and hoop during the day and in evening the senior groups performed with 5 hoops.

The atmosphere was electrifying thanks to the fans supporting all nations. The loudest cheers were of course for the host nation although Italy and Bulgaria got standing ovations as well. The open-ended difficulty has created a major change in the group exercise, creating truly dynamic and spectacular pieces of art, completely in sync with the music and even the outfits. Russia posted the highest difficulty mark, 14.4, a tenth ahead of Bulgaria but the Bulgarian ladies were far superior in execution, taking the lead with an impressive 23.100. The final promises to be very exciting!

In the junior qualifications the public saw great performances by Ukraine’s Khrystyna Pohranychna, all 4 Russians, Italians Eva Gherardi, Talisa Torretti and Sofia Raffaeli, Belarussia’s Anna Kamenshchikova, Bulgarians Tatyana Volozhanina and Anna Kelman and several others. The leaders after day 1 were Lala Kramarenko (RUS) with ball and Khrystyna Pohranychna (UKR) with hoop. Due to the 1-per-country rule, however, some big names won’t be competing in Sunday’s event finals.

After the flag parade of the 40 participating countries – a record by the way- the audience was treated to a fabulous performance by world-famous Spanish Flamenco dancer Rafael Amargo. A great experience here in Guadalajara! These Europeans were officially opened by President of the Royal Spanish Gymnastics Federation Jesus Carballo and UEG President Farid Gayibov.
