All eyes on Sofia for the Trampoline Worlds

November 7, 2017

Preview of the 2017 World Championships in Trampoline, Double Mini-Trampoline and Tumbling in Sofia (BUL)

The 32nd edition of the Trampoline World Championships will kick off in Sofia (BUL) on Thursday. On the programme are individual and synchronised trampoline, tumbling and double mini-trampoline for senior gymnasts. FIG has chosen two excellent ambassadors for this event, none other than the first Olympic Champions Irina Karavaeva and Alexander Moskalenko. Both former gymnasts also hold the most World titles and they will award the gold medal to the 2017 individual Trampoline World Champions.

Who to watch?

2014 and 2016 European Champion Uladzislau Hancharou (BLR) is the one to beat since he won the Olympic gold in Rio last year. His main challenge will come from the strong Chinese team which includes 3 World Champions: Dong Dong, Tu Xiao and Gao Lei. Together, Dong and Tu are looking to secure an unprecedented 5th synchro World title. The women’s competition is wide open now that double Olympic Champion Rosie MacLennan (CAN) has withdrawn and World Champion Li Dan is absent.

In Tumbling, European Champion Anna Korobeynikova (RUS) is aiming to hold off China’s triple World Champion Jia Fangfang who can match the Russian’s gold medal record. The powerful British school also aims for the podium. In the men’s competition, the gymnasts from Russia, Great Britain and Azerbaijan hope to upset China’s Zhang Luo.

Double Mini-Trampoline star Mikhail Zalomin, reigning European and World Games Champion, aims to regain the World title he held in 2013 and 2014 but lost in 2015 while Sweden’s Lina Sjoeberg, aka the DMT machine, has the difficulty and execution to be crowned World Champion.
