Dear Aerobics friends

With spectacular performances at the World Championships in June, our gymnasts proved to be -yet again- the best promotion for our discipline. The atmosphere in Guimaraes was excellent and we saw many worthy World Champions and medallists. We even witnessed a marriage proposal from announcer Pedro Canilhas to Spanish star Sara Moreno! These Worlds also served as the one and only qualifying moment for next year’s European Games.

Last month, we organised our annual training camp, this time in Latina, the national training center in Italy. More than 65 gymnasts from 12 countries gave the best of themselves in a fun and constructive environment.

Last but definitely not least, I am pleased that I can announce the hosts and dates of the 2019 European Championships! Read all about it below …

Here’s the news you’ve all been waiting for … Next year’s European Championships in Aerobic gymnastics will be held from 23 to 25 May in the beautiful setting of the National Gymnastics Arena in Baku (AZE), site of the 2015 European Games! The 11th edition of this continental event features both juniors and seniors, spread over three exciting days of competition!

As the participating nations were decided at the World Championships and the competition schedule was approved, it’s time to get excited for the second edition of the European Games!

The qualifiers!

The Opening Ceremony will be held in Minsk Stadium on Friday 21 June 2019. On Monday 24 and Tuesday 25 June, Aerobics (mixed pairs and groups) will share the stage with Trampoline (individual and synchro). We want you to be there …

Tickets go on sale on 1 December!

From 8 to 14 July, 65 gymnasts and 26 coaches representing 12 countries (AZE, CZE, FRA, ESP, ITA, HUN, GER, MDA, LTU, RUS, SVK, SWE) trained hard at the Italian Federation’s national training facilities ‘Il Chiodo’ in Latina, 55 kilometers from Rome. Assisted by my TC members Olga Kyselovicova, Vladislav Oskner and Lefki Ferentinou, I organised the camp. We could also count on the support of experts Mariana Mezei (ROU), Antonio Barone (ITA), Dora Hegyi (HUN) and Monica Darone (ITA). We focused on choreography where Hegyi showed how to combine interesting transitions in a fluid dynamic way and instruct how to do beautiful, creative, difficult eight counts. Mezei and Barone provided cheerful moments of dance, both classic and modern, while Oskner focused on teaching creative and original lifts.

Two other TC members, Monika Wiethoff and Alina Dragan, took care of the coaches’ course in which they gave both theoretical and practical lessons. The aim was to enable the participants to work independently as coaches after completing the course.

Thanks to all these experts, the enthusiasm of the gymnasts and coached, and the support of UEG, FIG and the staff at Latina, Gigliola Carosi, Domenico Catanzariti, Maria Galia Mattia, this training camp was a great success! See you next year!

The first weekend of June, Aerobics took to the stage and the worldwide spotlight as the 15th World Championships were held at the Multiusos of Guimaraes (POR). Russia returned home with the most medals, 5 in total, including three World titles! They had the best showing in qualifications, cruising to team victory ahead of Korea and Romania, improved on their second place in qualifications by winning the Aero Step gold and earning their first ever gold medal in the trio competition. Other highlights included the repeat victory for Italy’s ‘Romeo and Juliette’ Michela Castoldi and Davide Donati… Want to know more? Follow the link to our highlights article!

Big thank you and congratulations to all participants!

With my best wishes,

Cristina Casentini
