The 23rd European Championships in trampoline, double mini-trampoline and tumbling were held in Saint Petersburg, Russia, in April 2012. The championships included senior, junior and under-21 competitions, which made it one of the larger trampoline events of the Olympic cycle.
Trampoline titles before London
Dmitry Ushakov of Russia won the men’s individual trampoline title, and Tatsiana Piatrenia of Belarus won the women’s. Both were part of the generation that competed for Olympic places in London later that year; Ushakov won Olympic silver there.
Three age categories
Running senior, junior and under-21 events side by side is demanding for organisers, but it gives a complete picture of a nation’s depth. The under-21 category in particular helps athletes bridge the gap between junior and senior competition.
Why the meet matters in the archive
– It was the last continental test before the London Olympic trampoline events. – Russia and Belarus were the two leading trampoline nations in Europe at the time, and the individual titles were shared between them. – Double mini and tumbling, though not Olympic, were contested in full, as they are at every edition.
