1988 Olympic Champion Elena Shushunova passed away

August 17, 2018

At the age of just 49

Yesterday the Russian Gymnastics Federation notified news agency TASS that Elena Shushunova passed away in her hometown of Saint Petersburg. She was admitted to hospital following pneumonia and died of complications. She was just 49 years old.

Elena Shushunova was one of only 5 women to have won the ‘Grand slam’: continental, world and Olympic all-around titles. She won 5 European, 5 world and 2 Olympic gold medals. Her total medal tally stands at 22. Her most famous victory came at the 1988 Seoul Olympics where an exciting battle with Daniela Silivas unfolded. Going into the last rotation Shushunova needed a perfect 10 on vault to surpass the Romanian. And that was exactly what she did!

On behalf of the European gymnastics community, we wish her family and friends much strength in this difficult time. Rest in peace, Elena.
